Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, some younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease. The program is divided into several parts, each covering different aspects of healthcare.

Medicare Part A: Hospital Insurance

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and limited home health services. Most people do not pay a premium for Part A, as they have paid into the Medicare system through taxes during their working years.

Medicare Part B: Medical Insurance

Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment. It requires a monthly premium, which is based on income.

Medicare Part C: Medicare Advantage

Part C is an alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private insurance companies. It combines Parts A and B, and often includes additional benefits like vision, dental, and prescription drug coverage.

Medicare Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage

Part D is an optional program that covers prescription drug costs. It is offered by private insurance companies and requires a monthly premium.

Enrollment in Medicare

Most people become eligible for Medicare when they turn 65, but some may be eligible earlier due to a disability. Enrollment in Parts A and B is automatic for those already receiving Social Security benefits. Others will need to sign up during a specific enrollment period.

Costs of Medicare

While some parts of Medicare have no monthly premium, others require a monthly premium and/or other out-of-pocket costs. It is important to understand the costs associated with each part of Medicare when deciding which coverage options are best for you.

Coverage Gaps and Limitations

While Medicare covers many healthcare costs, there are certain services and items that are not covered. It is important to understand these coverage gaps and limitations to ensure you have adequate healthcare coverage.

Choosing a Medicare Plan

There are many Medicare plan options available, and it is important to research and compare them to find the best fit for your healthcare needs and budget. Some people may prefer Original Medicare, while others may find Medicare Advantage plans or Medicare Supplement plans to be a better fit.

If you like to be signed up by an out of state agent who will hammer you over the head and never talk to you again, then yes. Otherwise, I strongly advise that you sign up with a local broker that understands that states plans best, and so that you can have a single point of contact any time there is an issue
